Are Seamless Gutters Really Seamless?

by | Feb 21, 2012

Seamless gutters or Continuous gutters is a term that has been used for years. Most folks think that they are getting a gutter with no seams, therefore they have a system that will not leak. Gutter installers will even promote the fact that they will eliminate leaks. This is only a half truth.

The truth is, that there is no such thing as truly continuous gutters. Even if you have straight runs of gutter on your home with no corner miters you will still have end caps that could possibly leak. If you have a house that has corner miters they are also possible points where leaks can occur. The nice thing about custom formed gutters is they keep the possible leaky seams to an absolute minimum as the straight runs are one continuously formed piece. If the miters are formed correctly without the aid of a pre-formed corner pieces it greatly reduces the chances of leaks.

When properly installed with top of the line sealant that is intended to last 15 years or longer, potential leaks are very few and far between. Even the best gutter installers can seal a joint correctly and still experience a few leaks from time to time. Sealants sometimes form air pockets in them, also temperature extremes immediately after application of sealants can thin or pull away from the joint. So no seal is perfect. But by installing seamless design gutters versus store bought options is by far the best way to go.

If you select Aluminum material for your gutters the life of the gutter system can be 30-40 years if they are properly maintained.
