Plastic or Vinyl Gutters are they worth it?

by | Feb 21, 2012

We have replaced tons of vinyl gutters and plastic gutters, in our opinion they are a waste of money and here is why:

  1. Plastic gutters will not rust but they will break down from the UV rays of the sun and will become brittle
  2. Depending on how clean you keep them steel gutters will last longer.
  3. Leaning a ladder against them to clean them out or gain access to the roof they will not withstand the weight of the ladder against them. Depending on age they can crack rendering them useless.
  4. Rubber seals that join the gutter sections every 10 feet are made of cheap rubber and seem to fail often creating seam failures. Because of the ugly brackets that are used to affix the gutter to the house, it kinda looks like you had a plumber install them. From a cosmetic standpoint they leave quite a bit to be desired.
  5. Plastic gutters are not recyclable which means we are sometimes creating additional dump fees to get rid of them. Not to mention creating problems for the landfill. Metal gutters are recyclable which is a better overall choice for the environment.
  6. Connecting parts are very expensive, sometimes depending on the application the materials can cost more than hiring us to to supply and install gutters for you. Sometimes do it yourself projects can save money, this is not always the case with plastic gutters.
Seamless Aluminum Gutters and downspouts are by far a better long term investment in your home.

Having been armed with this information, can you think of a good reason why you should invest in plastic gutters? We can’t think of a single one. Enough said.
