Why do you have the bump on the front of your gutter cover?

by | Feb 21, 2012

That answer is several fold. First and foremost it provides strength and uniformity which is essential to proper mounting and long term support. It also provides a lip out front that is a press fit under the front lip of the gutter. Other reasons are generally based upon product performance.

  1. The gutter bump will keep the gutter debris off the front of the gutter face and in an area that will allow the debris to dry out from the top of the cover as well as the underside. When the debris is dry it will be blown away with gentle or blustery winds.
  2. The bump facilitates extra breathability inside the gutter system by allowing air to flow through the gutter system and allowing the debris on the top side to dry out faster.
  3. Larger leaves will high center on this bump allowing air space below. Leaves can be blown off easier because wind can get underneath them.

Some competitors will lead you to believe that this will cause leaves to build up behind this gutter bump and keep them there. The fact is they actually clear much faster because the bump is there. Also consumers must take into account that this is a perforated product with 46% open area which retards surface tension with the debris which means that the debris will not stick as easily as it would on a denser surface like a fine mesh screen or other solid metal surface.

We have monitored the performance of our product on numerous applications ranging from moderate to heavy debris applications. Our product will clear by normal wind currents that come with weather front changes. Many times 85% of the cover surfaces on the home are cleared after a stiff wind. The only exceptions are in the inside turns where roof valleys and gutters meet, as the wind cannot clear a corner well. Occasionally the customer will need to blow or clear these areas of build up. We refer to this as roof maintenance versus gutter or cover maintenance as the debris is on the roof and not in the gutter where it belongs. No gutter cover is ever totally maintenance free and anyone that tells you that theirs is immune from maintenance is probably telling you a whopper of a story.

Gutter covers are not intended to replace roof cleaning. By that we mean that annual roof maintenance is important to extend the life of your roof. Keeping the roof clean by removing debris from shingles and collection points is very important. If a blower is used to clear roof debris the remaining debris still sitting on top of your covers will be blown off at the same time.

Our intent is to sell you a product that will provide you with years of trouble free service with a minimal amount of interaction by you. Our Premium Gutter Cover will do just that!
